What
is RSS?
Look for the symbol
(left) to indicate a site with RSS feeds. RSS is a
popular way to pull in news and information from across
the Web. "Really Simply
Syndication" allows web sites
and blogs to push content to you easily - that is,
when its published it comes to you directly. An RSS
feed contains regularly updated headlines linking
to Web content. In order to subscribe (FREE) to an
RSS feed of interest, you must first have a "news
aggregator" (or news reader).
What
is a "news aggregator"?
A news aggregator is a program
that allows you to access all the headlines you've
subscribed to. This enables you to read a wide variety
of content of interest to you all in one place (as
opposed to jumping from site to site searching for
what you want).
How
do I subscribe to an RSS feed?
Go to one of the links below
and follow the directions. Firefox Live Bookmarks
saves directly to your Firefox web browser. Mac
users: save directly to your Safari web browser "All
RSS Feeds" bookmark.
Free
News Aggregators:
There
are many free news readers that are easy to use. Some
of the most popular readers are listed below.
Podcasts
What
is a podcast?
A podcast is a digital
media file (usually audio and video), or a series
of such files, that is distributed over the Internet
using syndication feeds for playback on portable media
players and personal computers. The name is derived
from "pod" referring to the Apple’s
portable media player, the iPod, and "cast"
to the idea of broadcasting.
How
can I listen to a podcast?
You
can "subscribe" (FREE) to podcast feeds
by submitting the feed address to an aggregator "podcatcher"
(like iTunes
- software that runs on the consumer's computer).
When new "episodes" become available in
the podcast they will be automatically downloaded
to that user's computer. Unlike radio or streaming
content on the web, podcasts are not real-time. The
material is pre-recorded and users can check out the
material at their leisure, offline.
