"What language do we think in? - the language of Spirit" Description: For three years (1978–81) I taught Russian language at Principia College, a post-secondary institution for students from Christian Science families located in south-western Illinois, just north of St-Louis (Missouri). From time to time, faculty members were invited to give ‘chapel talks’ in the college chapel, on a subject of their choosing. I decided to give my talk on language and comprehension, drawing on my long-time study of human linguistic interaction to gain new insights into the ‘language of Spirit’ (see also my article “Our native language breaks down language barriers” in The Christian Science Journal of June 1978, pp. 326–28). This study has, over the years, elucidated a number of parallels between our comprehension of human language and our understanding of the language of Spirit, and gave grist for a somewhat in-depth (and occasionally humorous) presentation of a most fascinating subject. Duration: 30 minutes.
"The Book of Job" Descrption: Of this seminar John says: This came about a number of years ago when I was asked to do a presentation for our church’s Bible study group on the Book of Job, but, as it turned out, on the day they were meeting, my wife and I would be on our way to our Association in America. So it came to me to record my talk on tape, to be played at the study group’s session. This opened up a new avenue for presenting the results of my research on Job. Since the Book of Job was actually written as a play, it seemed that a dramatised presentation was a natural fit. To modernise it a bit, I decided on a dramatic reading of excerpts from the various characters’ monologues as given in the Good News Bible. One of my principal sources for information on this book was Marchette Chute’s The search for God, which cast a new and surprising light on the context of the ‘play’, particularly on the role of the young man Elihu. I was also led to explore the parallels between Job’s ‘trial’ and the ‘trial scene’ outlined by Mary Baker Eddy in Science and health (a scene which is also set forth as a play with characters and dialogue). Both dramas give new meaning to the concept of what it means to ‘search’ for God. Duration: 30 minutes.
