Science and Health on "continuous audio"

[August 1, 2006] We have just received word that Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy is now available on Spirituality.com in "continuous audio" format. What is this? It is the continuous playing (streaming) of the audio version of Science and Health over the internet. The recording runs on a continuous loop, so rather than starting at the Preface, you might find yourself in the chapter "Marriage," or perhaps in "Footsteps of Truth." The next time you visit, you may well begin at an entirely different place in the book.

New President of The Mother Church

[June 27, 2006 - from the Clerk of The Mother Church] - Marian C. English, C.S.B. of Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA, has been elected as President of The Mother Church effective June 19, 2006. She will complete the one-year term left vacant by the passing of our dear friend and colleague David Reed.

Marian was introduced to Christian Science through a good friend who shared with her a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. She found hope and healing answers to many lifelong questions in this book and quickly became a serious student. Eventually, she exchanged her career as a professional musician for a new career as a practitioner of Christian Science healing.

As a member of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship for nearly a decade, Marian has traveled throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe speaking at healthcare facilities, continuing education programs, prisons, detention centers, homeless shelters, and retirement homes. She has given numerous radio and television interviews in her lecture work and has been a contributor to the Christian Science periodicals.

As President, Marian will support in various ways the theme of this year’s Annual Meeting, “A Church of Healers.”

100th anniversary of the dedication of the Extension of The Mother Church

[Publisher's Note: June 10, 2006 marked the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Extension of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. The first 100 pages of the book "The First Church of Christ Scientist, and Miscellany" is devoted to "The Extension of The Mother Church of Christ, Scientist: Its Inception, Construction, and Dedication" We have republished here several items from this volume relating to the dedication of the Extension, central to which is the account of the Communion Service and Dedication which occured on June 10, 1906. We have set up the FULL TEXT of the specially prepared Bible Lesson for that day — "Adam, Where Art Thou?". This service was conducted SIX times that day, each with the capacity of 5000 faithful, including one service devoted to children. We hope these accounts serve as inspiration for each of you to rededicate yourselves to the Cause of Christian Science.]

"Concord" Users Survey

[From Christian Science Reading Room Activities at The Mother Church]

Our office has given much careful thought to the future of Concord, A Study Package. We are in the early stages of development for an entirely new version of Concord which we expect will be released within the next two years. At this point we are seeking user input to help us produce a new Concord product that is a better computer research tool.

Regular users of Concord are invited to participate in an online survey [click here]

  • The survey will close on May 24.
  • It will take about 1 hour to complete the nearly 80 questions. (This is not a mandatory survey and only those who feel comfortable answering detailed questions on Concord should participate.)
  • Once you begin, please complete the entire survey or your results will not be tabulated in the final summary.
  • Please feel free to forward this email to any Concord users who might be interested in participating in this survey.
  • If you have questions, please email OpenDoors@csps.com.
  • The survey covers all aspects of Concord features, including: searching, jotting, reference books, text editing, file management, hymnal, children's features, file sharing, integration to other Christian Science Publishing Society products, foreign languages, and more.

We appreciate all honest thoughts and practical experiences from Concord users, as well as creative ideas for new tools that will help in your work as a Christian Science student, practitioner, teacher, church member, or Reading Room librarian.

An invitation to attend Annual Meeting (in person or via the internet)

[May 15, 2006] From Nathan Talbot, Clerk of The Mother Church

It’s time for us to gather together as a Church family (either in Boston or on the Web) to think and pray deeply about a topic of great importance to our Church – Christian healing. The healing of limitations, frustrations, estrangements, fears, as well as the healing of sin, sickness, and death is still “the babe we are to cherish.” (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 370).

You are invited to view a short video message about Annual Meeting from The Christian Science Board of Directors. To open it, use this link:

Annual Meeting convenes on Monday, June 5 at 1pm, EDT, in The Mother Church Extension in Boston and will last just over an hour. The meeting will be webcast live on The Mother Church website.

Following the meeting, there will be two one-hour special presentations on “Christian Science practice and nursing” and “Youth.” These will not be webcast, but they will be posted on the Church website shortly afterwards.

For more information, please visit the Annual Meeting section of the Church website.

From the Board of Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society
A note about the Christian Science Bible Lessons
"Our Publishing Society, and our Sunday Lessons, are of inestimable value to all seekers after Truth"
(Miscellaneous Writings, p. 114).

[updated May, 5, 2006] Readers of the September 10, 2006 Bible Lesson "Substance" and the September 24, 2006 Bible Lesson "Reality" will find these Lessons each contain five sections instead of six. This is not a mistake. Rather it is the result of a deep desire to more fully demonstrate the spiritual potential and purpose of the Bible Lesson, which Mrs. Eddy deemed so vitally important both to our Church and mankind that she referred to it as "...a lesson on which the prosperity of Christian Science largely depends" (Church Manual, p. 31).

Students of the Bible Lessons may have already noticed over the past year or so that the number of citations and/or the overall length of a particular section have varied from standard practice, in order to support the message. Structuring the number of sections of these Lessons according to the demands of their unique, spiritual content allows our "Pastor" to preach with greater flexibility, freshness, and healing inspiration.

The Trustees have authorized the Bible Lesson Committee to place its primary emphasis on compiling Lessons that support the increased insight, understanding, and spiritual growth of the reader. So, future lessons may vary in the number of sections, the number of citations, as well as the overall length, as the Deed of Trust for the Publishing Society allows.

Mrs. Eddy's correspondence concerning the Bible Lessons shows she was clearly focused on their spiritual content rather than simply their form. In a letter to William and Daisette McKenzie on November 4, 1905, she wrote, "Select with much study and care the correlative Scripture for the Sunday Lesson. The field needs most the lines between Christian Science and scholastic theology drawn not too tight at first, but drawn distinctly, wisely, lovingly" (L13074, Courtesy of The Mary Baker Eddy Collection).

These Lessons are ordained to be a living power of healing and blessing — in our church services, individual lives, and our world."Let the Word have free course and be glorified" (No and Yes, p.45).

Intent to Elect David Reed, CS, as President of The Mother Church

[May, 1, 2006] The election of new officers of The Mother Church by The Christian Science Board of Directors, called for annually in the Church Manual, will take place this year on Monday, June 5, prior to the Annual Meeting. We wanted to let you know, in advance, of our intent to elect David Reed, CS, of Boston, Massachusetts, as President of The Mother Church for the coming year.

David Reed taught grade school in the public school system in Southern California for a number of years before he began advertising as a healer in The Christian Science Journal. He has devoted decades to the public practice, a commitment that illustrates perfectly the theme of this year’s Annual Meeting, “A Church of Healers.”

David’s spiritual education began in a Christian Science Sunday School where his parents dropped him off regularly as a child. What he learned there, and later in a Christian Science college organization, helped heal him of asthma. When he turned twenty, the branch church he joined made him a Sunday School teacher. His first patient was one of the pupils in his class.

Drafted into the Army during the Vietnam era, he volunteered to serve as a Christian Science representative for the Armed Services, where he helped conduct on-base Christian Science services. He took class instruction one week after being discharged from the Army. That step launched him toward the healing practice.

David has served in branch churches in many capacities, including Sunday School teacher, First Reader, and Assistant Committee on Publication. He and his wife, Gail Gilliland, live in Boston and spend time in rural California. His duties as President will specifically support the practice of Christian Science in various ways that will emphasize our role in the world as a Church of healers. We are deeply grateful that David has indicated his willingness to serve as President of The Mother Church for the coming year.

JILL CARROLL RELEASED

Baghdad Reporters Cheer Carroll Release, But Questions Remain [EditorandPublisher.com]

Abducted Reporter After Release: 'I Was Treated Well' [EditorandPublisher.com]

March 30, 2006 - Statement from The Christian Science Board of Directors:

About The Release Of Jill Carroll
Uncountable have been the cumulative prayers and pleas, the messages of support and tears of concern shed for Jill Carroll over the past three months. Today, we cry tears of joy for her release.

Along with you–the millions of compassionate individuals representing so many faiths and nationalities, and especially the readers of The Christian Science Monitor and its website who've stood with Jill during her captivity–our hearts are full of gratitude to God for this breakthrough. We cannot help but think of the opening line of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by the Monitor's founder, Mary Baker Eddy: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings."

And yet, the immense efforts to secure one reporter's release ultimately must be for some larger cause, for something beyond the one news bulletin we've longed to hear every day since January 7, when Jill was captured and her translator was killed. Anyone who is being held captive, out of any willful passion or purpose, should be freed. Those who have been kidnapped before and after Jill must have their freedom, too. In fact, even kidnappers themselves deserve freedom from the kind of imprisonment their lives represent.

We hope and trust in the power of divine grace: That continued prayer–and political and diplomatic efforts somehow moved by this profound mental and spiritual force–will help eradicate the whole plague of kidnapping and terrorism, of violent action and reaction. The people of a region known as "the cradle of civilization" have rights beyond the human and political to enjoy the blessings of a civil and calm society.

We're deeply thankful for the monumental labors that went on in agencies and offices of the United States government, within the government of Iraq, and among individuals in Iraq and worldwide. To everyone who offered private and published messages of support along the way, you have our heartfelt thanks.

The entire staff of this newspaper, in particular its international editors, writers, and management, worked virtually around the clock on Jill's behalf. Their extraordinary work during this difficult period made it possible to continue publishing a news product worthy of the Monitor's name and reputation.

What can be said of Jill's mother, father, and sister that could speak any louder than their public example of steadfast love and resolute advocacy? And their sincere concern for others being held captive concurrently with Jill? We rejoice in their long-awaited happy reunion with their daughter and sister.

It is a sad fact, however, that many kidnappings in Iraq have not turned out as favorably as this one. We're also mindful of concerns that have been raised about Jill's mental and emotional state after weeks of duress. Whatever may be needed to help her readjust will be provided.

Prayer and brotherly-sisterly love have proved their potency. What greater good can be accomplished if we stay with them? One sure effect is the softening of hardened hearts, mostly, of course, in the ones doing the praying. In the spirit of doing unto others what we would want done unto us–that is, in the Golden Rule that is found in every major religion–we reach out to Jill's captors and those who still hold others hostage. May they find a purpose closer to that for which Jill Carroll is now known–constructive, street-level compassion for all the people of Iraq, and an unbiased love for all mankind.

A loved Bible proverb says, "As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country." Jill Carroll's freedom is truly good news to rejoice in, as is the fact to so many of us today: Iraq is no longer a "far country."

"In support of Church, healing and unity"

[March 6, 2006 - from The Christian Science Board of Directors and Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society]

Effective today, we have taken the final steps to restore the organizational structure that Mary Baker Eddy put in place for recognizing and advertising Christian Science churches, societies, practitioners, and nurses.

The process by which Churches of Christ, Scientist, and Christian Science Societies are officially recognized by The Mother Church is being reconsolidated with the Journal-advertising activity in the Publishing Society. Advertising in The Christian Science Journal, "in accordance with the rules of The Christian Science Publishing Society,"1 will once again constitute recognition of a branch church or society by The Mother Church as it did when Mary Baker Eddy established the branch advertising process in 1898.

From 1898 until 1919, as Christian Science groups successfully applied to the Publishing Society to advertise as a branch of The Mother Church, permission to advertise was considered 'recognition." However, during the litigation (1919-1921) between the Trustees of the Publishing Society and the Board of Directors, recognition of branches, societies, practitioners, and nurses was separated from the Journal-advertising function administered by the Publishing Society. The recognition process was thereafter overseen by the Board of Directors and administered by the 'Branches and Practitioners" department, which eventually became part of the Clerk's Office.

The first steps of returning to Mrs. Eddy's design occurred in 2001, when all activities relating to Christian Science practitioner advertising were consolidated in the Publishing Society. Nursing activities were reunited in the Publishing Society in 2003.

The branch recognition activity is joining the department that administers practitioner and nurse advertising, and will now be called "The Christian Science Journal Directory Services."

Also, with the renewed emphasis on the Church's core activity of healing, and the added responsibilities included within this department, we are pleased to announce that its Manager, Eva Boone Hussey, has been appointed to join the group of Senior Managers of the Church and Publishing Society.

"This department supports activities that are at the very center of this movement – church and healing," said Midge Campbell, Chairman of the Trustees of the Publishing Society. "Absolutely, and we are grateful to reunite these activities in accordance with Mrs. Eddy's original intent" added Nate Talbot, Chairman of the Board of Directors. "These steps are very unifying and healing for both Boards as well as for the movement."

New President of The Mother Church
[from The Christian Science Board of Directors] — The Christian Science Board of Directors has announced its intention to elect Heloisa Gelber Rivas, C.S.B., of Boston, Massachusetts to be President of The Mother Church, effective from June 6, 2005 until June 5, 2006.  Heloisa has been a Christian Science practitioner since 1988 and a Christian Science teacher since 2000.  She came to the United States from Brazil to work for The Christian Science Publishing Society, where she filled many roles.  These included overseeing everything published in Portuguese by the Publishing Society; Managing Editor of the Portuguese edition of The Herald of Christian Science and then Managing Editor of the Herald, in its 14 languages.  She has also been active as a co-host of the Spanish radio edition of the Herald.  Heloisa has traveled extensively all over the world as a Christian Science lecturer, speaking in English, Portuguese, Spanish and French.  Heloisa comments: "It will be a great privilege to fill this role, and I'm especially looking forward to continuing to deepen the spiritual connections between our churches and their communities, locally and abroad, with special emphasis on the southern hemisphere."

Cynthia (Cindy) Neely, C.S.B., will be concluding her service as President of The Mother Church on Annual Meeting day.  Cindy's deep love for humanity has been very evident this past year as she developed new relationships throughout Boston.  Her partnership with the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute has helped bring hope and healing to the families of homicide victims.  Other activities have included serving on the board of Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries; regularly attending meetings of the Black Ministerial Alliance; volunteering at Haley House, whose programs support unemployed youth; and teaching in The Mother Church Sunday School. Her innovative response to community needs has led to lecture invitations, distribution of Science and Health, and requests for Christian Science treatment. Cindy says, "It's been a very enriching experience for me to develop relationships with Boston clergy, city officials, and other organizations, thus helping them to get to know our Church better." Cindy will return to Chicago to continue her healing ministry as a Christian Science practitioner and teacher.
We look forward to electing Heloisa to this new post on Annual Meeting day this year, and send our deepest gratitude to Cindy, for her significant contribution to the Boston community and The Mother Church during her year as President.

NEWS ABOUT THE CHAPLAINCY PROGRAM

[May 9, 2005 — Committee on Publication, Boston, MA] For decades there have been Christian Science chaplains serving in the U.S. military.  Their ministry includes ministering to Christian Scientists on active duty and conducting worship services.  For the last few years, this program has been administered by the Clerk's Office.  Effective immediately, the Committee on Publication will take over the administration of this program because central to the work of chaplains is correcting impositions on the public as they pertain to the United States Armed Forces.  Two other changes are:

  • For the last few years, Karl (Sandy) Sandberg has been The Mother Church's Endorser of Christian Science Chaplains.  Sandy is now involved full-time with his role as President of the Board of Education.  Therefore, Colonel (Ret.) Janet Horton has assumed the position of Endorser and she brings a rich background in Christian Science and the military to this role.  She entered the U.S. Army in 1976 as a chaplain and was the first woman assigned as a Division or Corps Chaplain and the first woman promoted to Colonel in the Army Chaplain Corps.  During her military service, Janet undertook many important assignments, including supervising religious support for the Joint Task Forces in Albania, Macedonia and Kosovo.  For most of the time, Janet will work from her home base in Florida but she will have an office on the 12th floor of the Administration Building.  We are very grateful for her willingness to take over this role.
  • For many years, The Mother Church oversaw a Chaplain Training Program whereby potential Christian Science Chaplains prepared for their ministry.  While this program has not been operating for several years, it will now be reinitiated.  The details of this are still to be worked out and Janet will play an integral role in this development.

In remembrance: popular folk singer Mindy Jostyn

A letter from the Mindy Jostyn fan email list:

Dear friends and fans of Mindy Jostyn,
We're afraid that we have some very sad news to share with you. Mindy passed on Thursday, March 10. She passed peacefully with her husband Jacob Brackman, her mom, Chris Jostyn, and her siblings, Kelly Neale, Jay Jostyn, and Jennifer Jostyn
by her side. They and her young sons, Isaiah and Misha, are being supported by a wide circle of family and friends.
To those of you who are fans of Mindy, we know that this news comes as a blow. Mindy inspired so many of us with her recordings and performances, and she was taken from us much too soon.

But Mindy lives on through her music. In fact, she spent much of the last two years recording "Coming Home", a new CD that will be released later this year. Like "in His eyes", "Coming Home" is a collection of non-denominational "folk hymns" (a term that Mindy coined) that will bring inspiration and comfort to all who hear it. As a way to honor Mindy's life and her career, we have established two funds, and we ask that you donate to these funds in lieu of sending flowers. They are:

The Mindy Jostyn Music Scholarship Fund
Principia College (Mindy's alma mater)
Elsah, IL 62028

The Mindy Jostyn Music Scholarship Fund
Hawthorne Valley School (the Waldorf School that Mindy'sboys attend)
330 Route 21C
Ghent, NY 12075

If you'd like to write a note to a member of Mindy's family, you can send it directly to them or to the following address:

Name of family member
c/o North Shore Management
34 Rockport Rd., Unit 8
Gloucester, MA 01930

To share a thought or a note in remembrance of Mindy via her website, please feel free to post it in the "guestbook" area of
mindyjostyn.com.

CSDirectory.com to launch Interactive Teleconference Church Service

Thursday, January 20, 2004 — On Sunday, January 30th, CSDirectory.com will begin a Sunday, 6:00 pm EASTERN TIME, Christian Science interactive church service on a telephone conference call, on which up to 100 people will be able to participate at one time from all over the US and world. The services will follow the "Present Order of Services" published in the Church Manual. After the church service, those who wish to remain on the line will be able to participate in a discussion of the Bible Lesson. [We are also accepting volunteers who are Mother Church members who would like to take a turn as a Reader at one of the teleconference services.]

We will also have a special page on the CSDirectory.com site which will provide information on the service [including order of service, words to hymns, etc] and we'll also have quick links to Bible study resources for ease in on the spot lookups.

This service is designed for anyone interested in the study of Christian Science -- especially those who do not have a Branch church in their area; are busy Sunday mornings teaching Sunday School, etc. and would like to participate in a church service too; are "home bound"; are travelling; or who are involved with another faith on Sunday mornings but would like to check out a Christian Science church service. It is open to all ages, and church members and non-members alike. [We are actively working to establish a separate sister service/discussion in SPANISH soon - stay tuned for details.]

Patricia White, Founder of The Meridian School of Grenada, has asked us to send this letter from her to the Friends of the Meridian School and also to enclose statements from the Meridian staff and the Trustees.
John White, Treasurer

September 19, 2004
Dear Friends,
This message was to have been about our achievements thus far and plans for future growth made possible through your outflowing support of the Meridianís purpose. But material planning often needs Love's refining touch, which comes when the storm is past and we evaluate what we have at hand to rebuild.

— Patricia White, CS

There are repairs needed, but like Nehemiah's group we are ready for this good work. The buildings are standing. The walls of my apartment sheltered me and my two labs in the 8-hour battle. The guest apartment below stayed calm beneath us. The school rooms with tables were saved although the roof is gone. The downstairs classroom ceiling needs replacing but is drying out to be ready for the next crop of youngsters.

So perhaps our greatest achievement at this writing is - our band of Christian Scientists have been tried and steadied through feeling God's outstretched arm of Love. The result of this seeming trial is described by our Leader in Miscellany 204:3, "He gives His followers opportunity to use their hidden virtues, to put into practice the power which lies concealed in the calm and which storms awaken to vigor and to victory."

Our Christly foundation remains solid. All school staff, students and church members are well. And with your continued support, our progress is assured.

With love,
Patricia White, CS

Statement from the Meridian School Staff, September 21, 2004
On Sunday morning we held church services in the guest apartment at the school, and declared with one accord, "God was not in the storm and neither were we." We closed with Mrs. Eddy's hymn 207, which includes the line "and loss is gain". We are gaining in spiritual provisions each day and all of us feel deeply the prayerful support from all our friends.

Lack is not in our vocabulary, and like the Israelites, each day our needs are met. We help our neighbors not in sharing material things that are being brought in by welfare agencies, but rather we are helping our friends thru understanding prayers to lift their thought to God's love and care for each one, and they are responding.

As for our reconstruction needs, the Trustees agreed that putting the best materials into an old building was like putting new wine into old bottles. So we are repairing the original building as it stands. The cost of repairs including some equipment we lost could be between $5,000 and $10,000.

We will then pool our efforts to construct a new classroom building on adjoining land donated to the school. We are also looking for an inspired architect to assist us with the design and construction of this new building. Perhaps a company making tables and chairs, would like to donate a shipment, giving the donor a tax credit. As for the Sunday School, the yurt installed for classes in June is intact except for new hardware needed to reinstall it.

With grateful hearts, the Meridian Staff

Statement from The Friends of the Meridian School Trustees, September 24, 2004
We wish to thank those who have already responded to our initial e-mail notice of a Relief fund established for repairs and reconstruction. Those donations will be transferred to the fund's new title, Reconstruction and Renewal Fund, and checks for that fund should be mailed to the school's Maryland address noted in this letter. All donations are tax-deductible. They are being used for repairs, school supplies, assisting needs of students and families, and other expenses as they arise.

Any remaining funds will be used to help pay for the design, construction and supplying the new classroom building mentioned above. For more timely news about the school and events, please write or e-mail your e-mail address to meridianschool@aol.com.

At the time of this writing, contact with Patricia White is made only by cell phone. Mail and packages are just now being delivered. We suggest not sending anything to the school until specific needs are determined. In a follow-up letter or newsletter we will share current progress of the school as we continue in our work.

Who walks with Love along the way,
Shall talk with Love and Love obey;
God's healing truth is free to all,
Our Father answers every call;
'Tis He dispels the clouds of gray
That all may walk with Love today.

Hymn 139, 2nd verse

Sincerely,

Board of Trustees,
Friends of the Meridian School, Grenada
