Dr. Elaine Follis

[posted on facebook] On March 4, 2008, The Christian Science community heard about the passing of Dr. Elaine Follis.

Elaine spent pretty much her entire life in school. In junior high, she was “Elaine the Brain.” In high school, people wanted to borrow her homework. In college, everybody was a brain and did his own homework. Things have a way of evening out.

Dr. Follis grew up in Quincy (that’s kwinn-zee), Massachusetts, she set out to become a college professor. And that’s exactly what happened. For over 30 years, Elaine taught Old Testament history and languages as well as Holocaust Studies, at Principia College. She wrote articles, gave papers at conferences, and eventually became chief academic officer.

Elaine loved every minute in the classroom. But Christian Science, with its solid Scriptural foundation, always owned her heart. Elaine started praying with people while in her teens and continued to do so throughout her academic career. Beginning just over a year ago, Elaine devoted all her time to Christian Science healing. Not long thereafter, God had a surprise for Elaine: She was appointed President of The Mary Baker Eddy Library in Boston. It’s not school, of course, but it’s really close! She was a huge support to TMC Youth (The Mother Church YOUth), she did podcasts, and talks for just youth!

Elaine learned lots of lessons like: “follow your dreams and fill your life with what you love. God put that love in your heart for a reason. And never mind if people think you are a brain or a geek or whatever. Just be yourself. Let your light shine. There’s a place for everybody in God’s family.”

There will be a service in Quincy later on this month. As for Principia, you’ll have to ask the Dean but Im sure they’ll do something in honoring a remarkable woman!

Christian Science Church unveils new website

BOSTON, Jan. 25 — The First Church of Christ, Scientist announced today the relaunch of http://www.christianscience.com. At the heart of this new Web site is a collection of video clips in which people share their personal experiences in Christian Science. The public will hear
first-hand accounts of people who are living Christian Science, and how their prayers have healed them and others.

“People hear about Christian Scientists relying on prayer for healing, but what does that really mean?” said Tom Black, speaking on behalf of The Christian Science Board of Directors. “It is good to know that people who rely on the Web for information have a place where they can hear about Christian Science healing directly from those who have experienced it.”

Christianscience.com makes it easy for the public to get accurate information about Christian Science and Church activities. The Church expects this will clear up some of the common misconceptions about Christian Science, such as:

  • Why Christian Scientists choose to rely on prayer for healing,
  • That Christian Science is not Scientology, and
  • That Christian Science is a Christian, Bible-based religion, not a cult.

“Mark Twain & Mary Baker Eddy” a film by Val Kilmer

A 10.5 minute trailer of this upcoming film project by Val Kilmer is now available. Click on the arrow below to play the trailer.

To his publisher, Mark Twain remarked, “Christian Science is humanity’s boon. Mother Eddy deserves a place in the Trinity as much as any member of it. She has organized and made available a healing principle that for two thousand years has never been employed, except as the merest guesswork. She is the benefactor of the age.” — Mark Twain, A Biography, by Albert B. Paine, Vol. III, p. 1271.

If everyone realized what is in that book (meaning Science and Health by MBE), you would not have enough room anywhere to accommodate the people who would be clamoring for it. ~ Albert Einstein

Margaret Rogers CSB elected to Christian Science Board of Directors

Replaces retiring M. Victor Westberg effective January 22. See complete article from Wednesday, January 23, 2008 Christian Science Monitor.
