Artis Lane
Artis Lane, sculptress and portrait painter, has a body of work spanning 65 years. She and her late husband became earnest students of Christian Science after a friend gave them a copy of Science and Health in the 1960s. Ms. Lane is a Mother Church member, a Class taught Christian Scientist, and has been an active member of the Beverly Hills Church, Beverly Hills, CA for many years.
Ms. Lane has painted and scupted more than a score of national and international celebrities, including Presidents Reagan and Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Barbara Bush, Cary Grant, Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones, Michelle and Barack Obama, Mrs. Walter Annenberg, Gordon Getty, and Magic Johnson.
Her bust of Mary Baker Eddy was motivated by her deep appreciation for what Mrs. Eddy has given the world through the revelation of Christian Science.
"Portraits of Mrs. Eddy hang in Christian Science churches and Reading Rooms all over the world, but I have never seen a bronze bust of Mrs. Eddy. A bust, as a three-dimensional work, is more dramatic and arresting than a portrait, no matter how good the portrait may be. That is why I've done a bronze bust, as well as some black and white sketches of Mrs. Eddy at different stages of her life." — Artis Lane
