Commentary on Proverbs 8:1 — Wisdom and understanding are synonymous Hebrew feminine terms, according to the Westminster Bible Companion (Louisville: Westminster John Knox, 1995-). “A passage in a late book of Israelite wisdom, the Wisdom of Solomon, expresses the mutual seeking: ‘To fix one’s thought on her is perfect understanding, and one who is vigilant on her account will soon be free from care, because she goes about seeking those worthy of her, and she graciously appears to them in their paths, and meets them in every thought’ (Wis. Sol. 6:14-16).”
