Julia
Schechtman Pabst has sung in various European opera houses in
Germany, Switzerland, and Holland, roles such as Gilda in Rigoletto, Susanna
in The Marriage of Figaro, Rosina in The Barber of Seville, Adele in Die
Fledermaus, Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos, Adina in L'Elisir d'Amore,
Despina in Così Fan Tutte, Tytania in Britten's Midsummernight's
Dream. Previous to these engagements she attended Princeton University
and was accepted into the Opera Department at the prestigious Curtis Institute
of Music in Philadelphia. After a year there she left to begin her singing
career in Europe, where she spent 12 fruitful years.
Her CDs of sacred
music, Lilies and Simple Gifts, Eye on the Sparrow, and Psalms and Prophets
offer unique mixtures of periods, genres, and moods: oratorio as well
as traditional American melodies, old-time favorites and contemporary
pieces. She is accompanied on piano by the conductor, Saul Schechtman,
and lives in the Boston area.
Saul
Schechtman, conductor and composer, has led various orchestras
in Europe and the USA. A guest conductor with the Philadelphia Orchestra,
musical director of the TV series, Omnibus, conductor of the chamber orchestra,
Orchestra Piccola, he was also the musical director of first-run Broadway
shows such as Hello Dolly! and Carnival!.
His compositions
include orchestral works, instrumental music, and many art songs. Four
of his sacred songs and his new arrangements of Simple Gifts and His Eye
is on the Sparrow are included in the CDs, Lilies and Simple Gifts and
Eye on the Sparrow. He lives in New York.
