The Uganda Project

FALL 2004
Recently, we received letters of gratitude from students being assisted by UP. You will enjoy reading about this practical outreach and how it affects their lives.

Development Studies
It has been quite a good experience for me to associate with the Uganda Project that seeks to assist the young Christian Scientists here to develop a sense of self-sustainability as individuals who will be capable of participating in the development process of our country.

I'm one of the beneficiaries of this project. I'm a young man who went through a lot of pain before I found Christian Science. I am now 26 years of age, and I was abandoned by my mother at the age of 4 years. My daddy passed on when I had just turned 12, but even at the time he lived he was not there as a daddy, and this means that I hardly had that parental love that most of you enjoyed. I lived with my grandmother who cared for me through my childhood.

I joined Christian Science through a friend who introduced me to the Society in Kampala in 1999. I remember being given a Science Health with Key to Scriptures by the Clerk of the Church, and before I could take it in my hands, some questions ran through my mind: Will you be able to understand the message in this book? Why this book and then the Bible? Will you finish reading this book given its huge volume and your poor culture of reading books? However, when I went home and settled down to look into this book, I can tell you that the very first statement in the preface ("To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings.") made me feel that I had regained my life which I had been missing for quite some time. It gave me the courage to continue reading, and as I read every message on the following pages, I was filled with relief.

My life has honestly changed a lot ever since I came in contact with this book. I didn't have love for people, but now it's quite different. Divine Love has continued to unfold a lot of supply for me. I completed my Advanced level of education in 1998, but I had to wait four years before I joined the University in 2002, and this was after UP offered to assist me.
The Course I'm taking at the University focuses on equipping students with skills that will help them participate effectively in the development process of the country, participate in economic policy formulation and in planning strategies for rural development, international relations and diplomacy. This Course helps students to be innovative and capable, initiating their own development projects. I will earn a Bachelor's Degree in Development Studies.

With Christian Science as my weapon of security, I'm living a life which is good.
I found my mother after 24 years of abandonment, and I have forgiven her. She is living a bit far away from me but I take time to visit her. I know things will continue to change and supply is available, for "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." (M. B. Eddy)

Marriage or School?
First of all, I'm very grateful for the tuition. UP has done a good job among Ugandans. Actually to me its my "parent." Being born into a financially poor family, had it not been for UP and Christian Science, I would not be what I am now - a lady getting a Master's Degree in Education!

UP has made me a very important person in our family since nobody else has ever completed secondary education. I know that it will be from this blessing that everybody in our family will be benefited from my being educated.

In my family, girls are forced to marry at the age of 14 as long as they are not studying. In fact I was also going to be forced by one of my uncles to be married when I failed to get tuition. But lucky enough, a friend rendered a hand, and later UP. So it has really done me good. And it's through my education that I make important decisions at home and for the entire community. UP has also helped one of my sisters with school fees, and she is now doing very well. God bless.

Injury Healed, Help Given
Well, I was playing in the intramural soccer games this weekend when I ran into another player and ended up cracking my rib cage. My house was leading 2-0 and I had scored both goals, so I was in so much excitement! I have been affirming the truth and expressing my divine right as a perfect child without giving power to the cause of the injury, because there is no such thing as an accident in God's kingdom. I am recovering really fast, but I have not been able to walk since then without help.

I wanted to express my sincere gratitude for the UP funds that I received. I have been able to register for all my classes this fall because I paid off my last year's bill. Now I have a full load of 15 credit quarter hours doing an internship at the Salvation Army working as an assistant manager at the homeless shelter in St. Louis.

Four days later........I am glad to tell you that I have recovered fully now and I am no longer on crutches. I have resumed my school duties and was able to work with two clients at the shelter. I helped give them some guidance with a drug problem. I gave them some counseling in order for them to get their act together - but with an emphasis that God loves them!

Social Sciences
I send my sincere gratitude to the Uganda Project committee. I am so happy and thank God for what UP is doing for me to keep me in school, and most of all I feel so glad that the assistance was sent even before I began attending any lecture in class. Your assistance, which is supply from Divine Principle, is the only reason why I am in school. Last year was the first year of my course, which is Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences.
I have been doing sociology, social administration and gender studies as my subjects for a full year, but now in my second year I'm taking only social administration and gender.
Every day I thank God for such kindness and love that makes you take care of my education, and I pray that God who is the source of supply helps you in all your endeavors and efforts. You are indeed giving us love. Your assistance makes me proud to stay in the university. I am sure if I didn't have such brothers and sisters, my education would be very limited. Christian Science has really helped me to know that God is the only supply and that all destiny lies in His hands, because I was not even certain of continuing with a university education because of the problem of tuition.

I would also like to inform you that I had my primary Christian Science class instruction this year. This has helped me to live in love and truthfulness. My spiritual growth was uplifted. I would indeed want to live in spiritual progress forever, and I thank God for my teacher for she taught me a lot of things, including Christian Science practice. I even had a great healing during class - a healing of a health problem that had affected me for seven years.

UP paid for this student to learn the German language in Uganda. Now he is studying in Germany!

Currently I am in Mannheim, Germany, at the headquarters of INWENT. This is the
organization that is responsible for all my scholarship matters while I study mechanics.
I went to the CS Church here and bought a German edition of Science and Health.
At the beginning of October I will be moving to the center of Mannheim city, which is not far from where I am now.

A Father's Thanks
I feel duty-bound to register deep appreciation for the wonderful financial scheme you have initiated to cater for the needy. Since my three daughters (Olivia, Maureen and Flavia), are among the beneficiaries, I feel greatly indebted to the extent that words fail me to portray the exact depth of my appreciation.

Please continue with this same spirit so that the generations to come also benefit. Please endorse my support for the project because of the fact that without your financial assistance towards my daughters' education their present dreams for higher education would not be realized. You have really done a wonderful job. God bless you and the beneficiaries.

— Alex B.

Note from Daughter
I acknowledge with profound thanks the assistance I receive from Uganda Project to cater for my education. Please acknowledge my gratitude for the funds you avail me annually.
Thank you very much for this rare gesture to the needy. I look forward to continued assistance as I have extended my plans for higher education.
I remain yours faithfully.

A Golden Opportunity
For three years as a Christian Scientist, I have received a thousand changes in my life. I have witnessed God's manifestation of love, care, and hope. I have learnt to be strong in life, always trust in God, and not to panic in times of trouble.

I had lost the hope of acquiring a higher education and living a good life. I always considered myself inferior to others, but truly Christian Science and Science and Health with Key to Scriptures by Mary Barker Eddy has made me an important person.
I am so grateful and indebted to Uganda Project that offered to pay for my university fees. This is a golden foundation stone in my life, among my relatives and friends. I thank God for Uganda Project, for its heart of gold, and for its support towards my education. I am now sure of a bright future in life. I do lead a good and happy life and I'm no longer miserable the way I used to be.

I am pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in commerce from Makerere University, Kampala, courtesy of Uganda Project. So far I have completed one year of study and am now a second year student. In our first year we studied a lot of things. We did six courses, which included Accounts, Business Administration, Economics, Business Communication Skills, Organizational Theory and Quantitative Methods/Mathematics. I am so happy that I passed all of them successfully. Special thanks goes to Lamech Katamba, (the administrator of UP funds in Uganda). He is a friend indeed and true Christian Scientist with a brotherly heart. He has helped me to excel in my studies by providing me with text- books and all necessary school supplies. He guides me on how to do my coursework and review for exams at the library, and also to stay a true Christian Scientist. He is always there for every one in need of attention and support.

I ca'ít express fully my unmeasurable appreciation and pleasure at this time, but it's my best hearty prayer for God's benedictions on Uganda Project. Christian Science is a concrete foundation for un-ending success! May you be blessed all the time.
