Founded
in 1999 in a remote part of Kenya, the Nogochoni Petals of Africa
School is a community learning center that is an integral part
of the village of Ngochoni and the surrounding communities. Ngochoni
is a border village and lies between two tribes, Luo and Kuria,
known historically for clashes. Today, peace and cooperation exist
between the tribes when in the 1980s there were burnings of homes.
The simple idea of educational outreach is the powerful leaven
that has dissolved tribal difficulties. The school has brought
two tribes together through the common need for education. Villagers
are small-scale farmers and cannot afford to support the school
monetarily, but they have given time, effort, and resources to
help build new classrooms, cook meals, as the school grows each
year. The
Petals School serves more than 140 young people through sixth
grade. The teachers and staff members are Christian Scientists.
Sixty to seventy students and parents attend church services and
the Christian Science Sunday School.
“The
school is bringing more harmony to the village because the people
are bringing peace and harmony and love to each other,”
says Jared Ambugo, a founding member and board member who gave
his family land for the school. “We have some teachers from
Kuria, some teachers from Luo, and the students and teachers are
working and learning together in peace.”
Thanks
to the kindness of many friends, generous donors have provided
a new well, scholarships, teacher salaries, classroom furnishings,
new classrooms, student housing and more. The purpose of the 2007
annual campaign is for solar panels, batteries and inverters to
run the water system and provide school and dorm lighting.
