Lovia Early Childhood Development and Care Center
Accra, Ghana, West Africa
 Gladys Darkwa turned her garage into a nursery for 10 young
children nearly 20 years ago. Today her Lovia Early Childhood Development and
Care Center is
an independent nursery, pre-school and kindergarten, serving the communities
of Mamprobi, Chorkor, Dansoman & other areas of Accra in Ghana, West Africa.
Currently, 120 children are enrolled; 12 teachers and attendants are employed.
Children speak different local dialects; teaching is in English. The program
begins at 3 months through kindergarten and includes meals & snacks. Mrs.
Darkwa shares: "The aim of our school is to provide each child with spiritual,
moral and disciplinary training. Working mothers leave their small infants
in the good care of motherly love at Lovia, where the absolute security of
the child is essential."
 The
Christian Science founder and teaching administrator of Lovia,
Mrs. Darkwa is committed to educating the whole child. Inspired
by "God
is Love," Lovia's motto is peace and love; the symbol is the dove. The
former regional Coordinator of Planned Parenthood of Ghana, Mrs. Darkwa understands
practical needs of young families. She is also a class-taught Christian Scientist,
who
teaches Christian Science Sunday School and serves on the Board of Trustees
for First Church of Christ, Scientist, Accra, Ghana. Lovia is certified by
the Ghana Education Service and the Department of Social Welfare.
