Camps
Leelanau & Kohahna
Learning Leadership by Living Christian Science
Camps Leelanau
& Kohahna provide a wholesome, loving, and supportive environment
where Christian Science Sunday School students can gain experience
in applying Science in new and challenging activities away from
home. Each camper learns the joy of overcoming self-imposed limitations.
We encourage the consistent acknowledgement of God's ever-presence
and government that results in the expression of strength, grace,
and perseverance. Our exceptional staff teaches these elements
to each individual camper, equipping our young Christian Scientists
to be leaders.
We are in
full swing preparing for the summer of 2004 here on Pyramid Point.
Right now we are working on hiring a top notch staff, scheduling
some of our special activities, and making some great upgrades
to our facilities. Please visit www.leelanau-kohahna.org
for more information.
What
do we do at camp?
Summers at
Leelanau & Kohahna are full of opportunity. Whether you're
waterskiing or wakeboarding on Glen Lake, sailing on Lake Michigan,
dune-jumping in the Sand Bowl, or hiking along the sandstone cliffs
of Pictured Rocks, we guarantee that no matter what your experience
level you will have a great time, hone your skills, and learn
how to be a leader in everything you do.
Other activities
include tennis, soccer, and other land sports, horseback riding,
kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, riflery, archery, silversmithing,
and more! Or you can take on our high ropes course with obstacles
dangling 22 feet in the air, climb our multi-route double-sided
rock tower up to 40 feet, and learn about teamwork and leadership
on our challenge initiatives.
We also offer
an extensive wilderness trips program. More than 30 trips each
summer explore Northern Lower Michigan, the Upper Peninsula, and
Canada. Backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, and climbing trips are
all on the schedule. And, we are famous for our four-day, three-night
competitive camping trips — the Senior Flag Trip for Leelanau
and the Challenge for Kohahna.
But
camp is not just for kids. Our Family Camp is second-to-none and
offers the same quality activities as our summer camp and lets
you enjoy a week of great fun, great food, and great people here
on Pyramid Point. Childcare and an expert staff mean you can relax,
play, or hang out by yourself, or with all or part of the family.
And you are sure to discover that at camp, everyone loves and
cares for each other as if we were all related.
Whatever the event, we view each activity as a vehicle for demonstrating
the law of Love. Excellence is part of everything we do here because
excellence is included in divine Principle. Integrity, selflessness,
and purity are encouraged while self-worship, mediocrity, and
apathy are not tolerated and are unmasked and destroyed as errors.
What
makes Leelanau & Kohahna different?
One of the
things that make Leelanau & Kohahna special is our picturesque
Northern Michigan location. Perched on a bluff overlooking our
2500 feet of prime, west-facing Lake Michigan beachfront, camp
is the ideal setting for basic and extreme water sports. Our more
than 220 acres of fields, forests, and hills are nestled between
parcels of National Park property, giving us plenty of room to
play and guaranteeing our privacy. And, since the Sleeping Bear
Dunes are our home, we have soft, sandy beaches, clean, crystal
blue Lake Michigan water, and tons of great dune activities.
Our trips
program is also unique. Leelanau & Kohahna embark on over
30 trips every summer, and destinations include the sandstone
cliffs of the Pictured Rocks Lakeshore Trail, the virgin forests
of the Porcupine Mountains, the ledges and rocks of Canada's Lake
Superior Coastal Trail (great for cliff-jumping!), and the rapids
of the White River, Pine River, and the Little Manistee. Every
trip promises improved outdoor and survival skills, challenges
for each participant, and a great time.
Two years
ago we started our off-shore sailing program, and we now offer
a two-night, three-day trip on Skipper Ted's 40 foot swan, one
of the most beautiful — and fastest — boats you'll
ever see. Participants will learn how to race, operate, and live
on a big boat, and stop at some cool spots along the way. This
year's trip will embark to the North Channel, a series of thousands
of gorgeous quartz and pink granite islands that rise up to 650
feet above the water. Check out Skipper Ted's article at our website
www.leelanau-kohahna.org.
But,
perhaps the greatest — and most important — aspect
that sets Leelanau & Kohahna apart is our commitment to character.
Our supportive, Love-based atmosphere encourages each camper and
staff member to step out of their "comfort zones" and
claim their limitless potential. Everyone returns home more confident
and capable because of their understanding of their heritage as
God's expression. Daily study is a key element to progress, but
we also view each moment as an opportunity to demonstrate perfection.
And along the way, you're sure to learn about the power of selfless
giving and unconditional love.
Over
80 Years of Leadership and Sharing
William "Skipper" Beals and sister Maude Beals Turner
founded Leelanau & Kohahna in 1921 and 1923, respectively.
For more than eighty years now the camps have been blessing the
lives of young people and helping them overcome the stumbling
blocks that would prevent them from becoming leaders.
Ten
Years ago, in that same camp spirit, Director Clark Shutt launched
the Leelanau Outdoor Center (LOC), an outdoor
education program focused on character development. It started
with one school, one program, and one staff member. Now, LOC serves
over 2300 children and about 30 Michigan schools — public,
private, and parochial — each year. Fall, winter, and spring
offer different activities, but each program is structured to
promote leadership, team-building, and perseverance. Although
LOC is non-denominational, our staff of Christian Scientists engages
in daily lesson study and, without proselytizing, ensures an atmosphere
of Love flows through every activity. The results have been remarkable.
In just a few short days, children develop confidence, improve
their communication skills, and learn valuable environmental,
outdoor, and survival skills.
In the fall
and spring, the high ropes course, climbing tower, and pine forest
initiatives see a lot of action in addition to an orienteering
course, sensory activities, pond study, wildflower hikes, canoeing,
and other activities. During our snowy winters we teach cross-country
skiing, snowshoeing, tracking, relive Jack London's "To Build
a Fire," get plenty of sledding in, and more. Every season
promises boisterous bonfires and night hikes, as well as educational
evening programs such as a raptor presentation with live birds.
Schools
come from all over the state, making each program special and
allowing us to tailor each program to the needs of its participants.
LOC has a great impact on these children and demonstrates the
effectiveness and thirst for Truth. Visit www.theloc.org
for more information.
