Christian
Science Society, Slidell, Louisiana
The
single story church building (right) used by the Christian
Science Society in Slidell, Louisiana, a community 25-30
miles northeast of the New Orleans metro area near the north
shore of Lake Pontchartrain, was damaged beyond repair when
a tree fell on the roof of the church. This roof damage
caused the church to sustain severe water damage and the
building was subsequently demolished. Several Christian
Science families from as far away as Massachusetts came
to the aid of the Society in helping to salvage church pews
and removed other items from the building before it was
demolished.
As
with the other Gulf region Christian Science congregations,
help has poured in from all over (see
the Society's "Thank You" list).
This assistance has allowed the Society to move forward
on a building project to replace their destroyed edifice
debt free. Deciding to rebuild on their existing property,
plans were drawn up for a 2-story structure with the church
auditorium elevated to the second level (see architect's
rendering, right). Construction has been delayed several
times due to factors including signoff on construction plans
by local officials, but in February, the new concrete slab
was poured and in March the framing began (see photo on
right). Each step of the way, prayer has surmounted the
empasse.
The
Society has chronicled their progress on their web site
(click
here for a progress report).
Although
these building is being constructed debt free, the Society
does have a "Wish
List" of items needed once construction
has been completed.
The
Society currently holds Sunday church services at 10:00
a.m. and a Wednesday Testimony Meeting on the 1st Wednesday
of the month at 7:30 p.m. — 545 Cross Gates Blvd.
