First
Church of Christ, Scientist, New Orleans
First
Church of Christ, Scientist, located at 1434 Nashville Avenue
in New Orleans sustained damage from Hurricane Katrina when
a portion of the roof blew off the building causing damage
in excess of 3 million dollars. Restoration has been ongoing
and, at this writing, is nearing completion. The congregation
is joyfully expecting to re-occupy the main auditorium for
church services sometime in April. New carpet is about to
be laid and the organ installed.
The
Sunday School, located in an attached building escaped the
damage and Church services were able to continue in this
building. To date, it is the only branch church in the city
currently holding services. Members from flood damaged Second
Church and Fourth Church have been part of the congregation
at First Church since the storm.
A "Humanitarian
Relief Committee" was spearheaded by First Church with
representative members also from the other area branches:
Second Church New Orleans, Fourth Church New Orleans, and
the Christian Science Societies in Covington and Slidell.
This committee confidentially helped to identify the relief
needs of area Christian Scientists and disseminated aid
to them. (We hope to share anonymous letters of gratitude
from some of the recipients of this aid soon.)
The
Reading Room maintained by First Church did not suffer major
damage and has remained open since Hurricane Katrina —
a center for spiritual comfort in this challenged city.
First
Church does not report any needs at this time other than
to encourage people to pray
for those in the city as it regenerates.
