Fox River Country Day School
Academics — Enrichment — Ethics — Community

Whether they are walking the trails of the forested campus, performing madrigals, presenting Spanish dialogues, or simply playing with friends on tech playground, students at Fox River Country Day School experience an atmosphere that encourages discovery and excellence. Founded in 1913, Fox River is an independent, fully accredited, coeducational day and boarding school serving students from pre-school through eighth grade. Located on 53 acres of rolling hills and field oaks, our country campus is a safe haven from the bustling Chicago community just 40 miles away.

For the 2008-2009 school year there were 203-day students and 20 boarding students with a broad spectrum of racial, ethnic, religious, and economic diversity. The school seeks students who are at or above grade level and who want to be a part of a learning community with a clear set of values.

Our mission is to educate the whole child through a values-based program, emphasizing excellence, enrichment, community, and ethics. The academic program at Fox River promotes personal achievement and is as rich and varied as it is challenging — thus preparing students for a college preparatory curriculum in secondary school.

The framework for our values-based program is a set of character building qualities that are highlighted throughout the school community. Since the earliest days, our school's philosophy has fostered personal growth, respect, and a love of learning. Faculty and staff strive to bring out the unlimited potential of each student and encourage them to recognize this ability in each other.

The School's educational philosophy reflects Christian Science idealism in important ways:

  • A fundamental belief in the goodness of all, as children of one universal God.
  • An underlying belief in the right and capacity of all students, faculty, and staff to achieve their full potential.
  • The awareness that as mans spiritual nature is honored, the learning process is less burdened and more joyful.
  • The commitment to minimize fear, self-doubt, pressure, and comparisons in the learning environment maximizes confidence, exploration, discovery, and expression.
  • The underlying premise that when talented faculty members love children — love imparting and sharing--the classroom environment is at its best.

Fox River Country Day School hiring and enrollment policies embrace and express diversity in all respects. A variety of religious backgrounds are represented among enrolled families, faculty, and staff. As provided by the School's by-laws, all members of the Board of Trustees and the Head of School are Christian Scientists, drawing their vision and values from the Judeo-Christian heritage including the Bible, the Ten Commandments, the Sermon on the Mount, the Golden Rule, and the writings of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy.

Since Fox River Country Day School's earliest days [as the Chicago Junior School], the Christian Science view of education has played a fundamental role in creating a positive learning environment. Today, the School continues to share practical expressions of its foundation through regular morning assemblies, a character-building program, and an expectation of high moral and ethical practices.

Small classes enable students to receive individualized attention. Professional development enables teachers to continue learning and to integrate new ideas into their curriculum. The faculty, together with students and dedicated parents, create a sense of community where it is safe to grow, to be challenged, and to discover the joy of learning.
